  4.     Ordinarily, the freeing of hostages is cause for
  5. celebration. But when a Frenchwoman, her Belgian companion and
  6. their young daughter were released last week after being held
  7. for 2 1/2 years by Abu Nidal's Fatah-Revolutionary Council, a
  8. Libyan-backed militant organization, there were as many
  9. questions as cheers.

  11.     Two weeks ago, Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi called for
  12. the hostages' release. After the three were set free in Beirut
  13. and safely returned to Paris, French President Francois
  14. Mitterrand expressed his "personal thanks" to Gaddafi, and
  15. French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas effusively praised the
  16. Libyan leader for his "noble and humanitarian gesture." But
  17. suspicious Frenchmen and other Europeans noted that last
  18. January France returned to Libya three Mirage jet fighters that
  19. had been grounded in France since 1986, when the European
  20. Community imposed an arms embargo against Libya. Many denounced
  21. the release as part of an arms-for-hostages deal.
